By VC August

Both patient and psychiatrist are in for the fight of their lives. This powerful, inspirational story tells of the tender bond of hope, caring and compassion between a patient and her psychiatrist.
V has fought throughout her life to overcome endless adversity and, eventually, to establish a successful business of her own and a loving relationship in New York City. Much of this success has been due to her courage, wit, independence and ability to meet obstacles with grace. But these qualities, which have served her so well, nevertheless prove insufficient to cope with her greatest challenge of all: Complications from a serious autoimmune disease now threaten to deprive her of her eyesight, her business, and her life. Reluctantly, she seeks help from a psychiatrist, Dr. Alex, only to find herself forming a deep spiritual connection with the doctor. Just as V begins to feel safe, she is confronted with the fact that her psychiatrist also has a life-threatening illness. V’s dedication to and empathy for Dr. Alex strengthen as Dr. Alex, herself, weakens, and manifest themselves by V’s willingness to stay by Dr. Alex’s side during this difficult time.

The Healing Hour brings a crucial and all-too-rarely discussed subject out of the shadows. It deals with the boundaries between patient and psychiatrist, and how, in a moment of crisis, two people’s continued commitment to each other can turn every precious hour into one that is healing for both of them.

By Peter Hunt

Peter Hunt crewed on five Andrea Doria expeditions, the “Mount Everest of wreck diving,” in the early 1980s before becoming a Navy pilot. Twenty years later, Hunt set out to dive the famous luxury liner again. An introspective odyssey of memory and heart-pounding adventure, Setting the Hook explores thirty years of extreme diving in a personal tale of learning to accept life’s oldest challenge. Less
The 1956 collision of the Andrea Doria and the Stockholm triggered a night of sheer terror for the Andrea Doria’s 1,706 passengers and crew and set in motion one of history’s most dramatic rescues at sea. From the moment the Andrea Doria settled on the sea floor in 240 feet of water, skilled sport divers have risked their lives to simply touch the “Mount Everest of wreck diving.” Not all returned alive.

Peter Hunt crewed on five Andrea Doria expeditions during the early 1980s before becoming a Navy pilot and settling in Washington State. Nearly twenty years after first exploring the Andrea Doria – and following twelve months of training in the sport’s amazing advances in equipment and techniques – Hunt hugged his wife and children goodbye and returned to New York to dive the Andrea Doria once again. The experience transformed him forever.

Setting the Hook explores the Andrea Doria through an introspective odyssey of memory, heart-pounding adventure, and history as thirty years of extreme diving and enduring friendships merge in a personal tale of learning to accept life’s oldest challenge.

A deep-sea diver explores shipwrecks and his own character in this gripping scuba memoir…Hunt’s taut scenes and meticulous prose will have readers holding their breath, but his saga probes hidden depths as well. -Kirkus Reviews

…fascinating read of true adventure, very much recommended. -The Midwest Book Review

“Setting the Hook” is excellently written, well structured, and superbly proofed…fully delivered on the diving, adventure and technical fronts, but it was the human angle of the author’s very personal journey that elevates this much recommended book. -C. H. Blickenstorfer, scubadiverinfo.com

…a book truly meant for everyone…heartfelt and inspiring story of diving, the fragility of life, and a reflection on our humanity. -Dive News Network Media Group, publishers of five regional print and electronic magazines

Peter Hunt’s engaging memoir…offers a thoughtful perspective of America’s wreck diving scene. -Simon Rogerson, British Sub Aqua Club (BSAC) SCUBA Magazine

…a story of camaraderie, conflict, drama, success and failure in early technical diving, and also one man’s personal struggle…thought-provoking…highly recommended. -Jesper Kjøller, DYK–The Scandinavian Dive Magazines

…the story of a wreck diving pioneer and the personal story of a man…Setting the Hook is a great read…well written…a great diving book, but an even better people book. -Charles George, Wreck Diving Magazine

A “Must Pack” book for your next dive vacation… -Sport Diver Magazine

The Trek

By David Schachne

The Trek: Adventure and Enlightenment on a Climb to the Summit of Kala Patthar, Above Mount Everest Base Camp, tells the story of David Schachne’s adventure in November, 2004, when he went on a trek, attempting to summit Kala Patthar, a mountain which towers above Mount Everest Base Camp (17,598 feet) in the Himalayas. At 18,192 feet above sea level, the summit of Kala Patthar offers successful climbers one of the most amazing views of Mount Everest (29,035 feet) without having to put your life at risk by entering the Khumbu Icefall toward Everest’s South Col route, or by climbing Mount Lhotse (27,940 feet) or Mount Nuptse (25,791 feet), the two high peaks closest to Everest. Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Schachne loved visiting the great outdoors as a teenager, going camping and hiking in the Catskills and the Adirondacks. Throughout his early adult life, he had a burning desire to go trekking in the beautiful, magical and magnificent Himalayas. This wasn’t just due to his love of the mountains and trekking. He believed going there would somehow make his life more fulfilled. An avid hiker, Schachne certainly did not expect his trek to be a “walk in the park”, but he was ill-prepared for what was in store for him. Continuously dodging bull-dozing yaks and dzos to prevent from being gored was the least of his worries. Climbing for hours and hours each day while mentally and physically exhausted; confronting constant sub-freezing temperatures; dealing with illness, high altitude sickness, piercing headaches, wretched odors, utter filth, bacterial infections, dysentery and more, he endured two weeks of pure, nightmarish misery. In this riveting account of his gut-wrenching trek over fourteen mostly sleepless days and nights, while basically malnourished, Schachne takes you along on each and every step of his journey so you can witness both the “glory” of the Himalayas and the “gory”, chilling details of his daily despair. You’ll experience the ups and downs of the hills and valleys, along with the highs and lows of both his personal triumphs and chaotic travails. You’ll hear about the most spectacular scenery on the planet, along with the most horrific, unsanitary outhouses ever imaginable – as you venture out with him on the long and winding road, to the summit. He flies from Kathmandu in Nepal to the most dangerous airport in the world (Tenzing Hillary Airport), in a town called Lukla, at 9,000 feet above sea level, then hikes to Phadking and then Namche Bazaar, a virtual tourist town and flea market at 11,000 feet, then to the architecturally beautiful Thyangboche (Tengboche) Monastery and then on to Dingboche, Dzugla, Lobuche and Gorak Shep, before finally attempting the summit of Kala Patthar. For better and worse, you’ll feel like you were there – as if you were walking in his shoes. Schachne reveals what originally led him to fall in love with nature, why he was so determined to go to the Himalayas, and why he persevered despite the brutal bodily punishment he experienced. If you don’t ever plan on visiting the Himalayas, The Trek will take you there without leaving the comfort of your home. Even if you are not a climber, or even a day hiker, you will get a fascinating inside-view of a sport and a world you have never seen before and hear a story that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat. For the very few of you, however, who are even possibly considering going to visit the Himalayas, or thinking about trekking to Everest Base Camp or attempting to summit Kala Patthar, then this book is an absolute must-read. Join Schachne for the most entertaining adventure of your life, as he takes you along on this thrilling, harrowing and laugh and cry-out-loud journey. Are you ready to take a hike?

By Joseph H. Carter Senior

I Heard JFK’s Death Shots: A Reporter’s Look Back At President John F. Kennedy’s 1963 Assassination After 50 Years.
As a United Press International correspondent, Carter was back-up reporter in Dallas for White House newsman Merriman Smith who won a Pulitzer prize for reporting Kennedy’s assassination. This is a behind-the-byline account of how the UPI team functioned under fire and deadline.
Author’s Note: Fifty years following the assassination of President Kennedy, editor-wife and I performed an informal search for books on the subject. We found more than 300.
Most texts seemed to center on strange conspiracies and outlandish notions about the dreadful shooting.
As part of the UPI team in Dallas before, during and after that November 22,1963 event, I feel an expertise on the subject. Many hours, days and months were spent discounting and refuting published lies.
Dozens of major newspapers. international news services, broadcast networks and magazines assigned their best and brightest investigative reporters. Disclosing a verified conspiracy would have gained Pulitzer or Nobel Prizes.
My book attempts to confirm the truth: Lee Harvey Oswald did it all alone and insanely.
