Fruit of the Secret God / The neo-symbolist photography of John Santerineross

goodlife guide

By John Santerineross

He is very involved in the preparation that goes into each of these pieces. He constructs each set and all relative props as if he were preparing for a play with the actors on the stage being his models, either close friends or himself. Since they are such close friends, he is able to draw from within them certain personal elements and experiences which are integral to his work.

He has been greatly influenced by the Symbolists, but his
imagery has been primarily inspired by his exposure to
Catholicism and Santeria as a child and by his fascination with Greek mythology and world religions. He sees himself as an artist who uses eroticism to explore the boundaries imposed on us through religion, media and other societal pressures.

He knows his images are difficult for some because of their possible graphic nature, but challenges his audience to move toward an understanding of their own fears and boundaries and embrace the imagery of those who already have.
