1929-start of the great depression. Billy’s father lost his fortune and both of his parents died shortly after. Billy was left homeless and decided to join millions of other men looking for a new start. He hops onto a freight train and rides the rails as a hobo.
After a few years of trying to scrape up enough food to feed himself Billy realizes that his decision was a mistake. Freezing in the winter and suffering in the heat of the summer months. Billy wishes that he could escape into the place he had hoped to find. There was no utopia and his faith had become a lost dream. Riding on the top of a moving boxcar, Billy is suddenly pushed off and the fall causes serious injuries. He meets Matilda who takes pity on him and nurses him back to health, changing his life forever.
